Bob Hastings

Robert "Bob" Francis Hastings (April 18, 1925 – June 30, 2014) was a versatile American actor known for his contributions to radio, film, and television, as well as his voice work in animated series. He gained fame for his role as the insufferable but comedic Lt. Elroy Carpenter in the classic sitcom *McHale's Navy*.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Charles and Hazel Hastings, Bob began his career in the world of radio with the show *Coast-to-Coast on a Bus* on NBC. His life took a pivotal turn when he served as a navigator on B-29 bombers in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Following his military service, Hastings landed a role as Archie Andrews in a radio adaptation of the beloved Archie comic series, which aired on the NBC Red Network and was sponsored by Swift & Company.

Transitioning to television in 1949, Hastings became involved in early science-fiction series, including *Atom Squad*. His breakout television role came in the late 1950s when he portrayed a lieutenant in Phil Silvers' *Sergeant Bilko*. During this period, he also made guest appearances on shows like Walter Brennan's *The Real McCoys*, showcasing his range and talent as an actor. Hastings' career, marked by both comedic and dramatic performances, left a lasting impression on American entertainment.
