Shemp Howard
Samuel Horwitz, born on March 11, 1895, and better known as Shemp Howard, was a prominent American actor and comedian celebrated for his role in the iconic comedy trio, the Three Stooges. Initially part of the act in the early 1920s, specifically from 1923 to 1932, Shemp performed alongside Ted Healy before returning to the group in 1946 until his untimely death in 1955. His tenure with the Stooges is marked by a unique comedic style, characterized by improvisation and a penchant for adding spontaneous humor to scripted scenes.
Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Shemp was the third of five brothers born to Lithuanian Jewish immigrants. Notably, his younger siblings include Moe and Curly Howard, both of whom also gained fame with the Stooges. Throughout his career, Shemp became known for his distinctive high-pitched "bee-bee-bee-bee-bee!" sound, which became a hallmark of his performances, alongside his ability to use his unconventional looks to enhance comedic effect.
In his personal life, Shemp married Gertrude Frank in September 1925, and they welcomed a son, Morton, in 1926. Tragically, Shemp Howard passed away suddenly at age 60 on November 22, 1955, after suffering a heart attack while returning home from a boxing match. His legacy endures, and the Three Stooges proudly hold a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a testament to their enduring influence in the world of comedy.
