Howard Charles Hickman (February 9, 1880 – December 31, 1949) was a prominent American actor, director, and writer, recognized for his significant contributions to both stage and film. Initially a leading man in theatrical productions, he transitioned to the film industry with the support of renowned producer Thomas H. Ince. Over his career, Hickman directed 19 films and frequently shared the screen with his wife, actress Bessie Barriscale, showcasing their collaborative talent in various projects before he made a return to the stage.

As the film industry evolved with the advent of sound, Hickman found himself back in front of the camera, albeit often in smaller roles. He is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of John Wilkes, the father of Ashley Wilkes, in the iconic film "Gone with the Wind" (1939). Throughout his extensive career, Hickman appeared in more than 270 films, solidifying his status in Hollywood.

His life came to an end due to a myocardial infarction in San Anselmo, California. Howard Hickman was laid to rest at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael, California, leaving behind a legacy that highlights his versatility and dedication to the performing arts.
