Born in Vienna to a Swiss writer and an Austrian actress, she developed a passion for acting early, influenced by her artistic family. Maria was the elder sister of acclaimed actor Maximilian Schell, alongside lesser-known actors Carl and Immy (Immaculata) Schell.
Her most celebrated role came in 1956 when she won the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in "Gervaise." This accolade solidified her status as a prominent figure in European cinema.
