George Chakiris

George Chakiris, born on September 16, 1932, is a renowned American dancer, singer, and actor celebrated for his dynamic contributions to film and theater. His most iconic role came in the 1961 adaptation of West Side Story, where he portrayed Bernardo, a performance that garnered him both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Before achieving fame, Chakiris honed his skills in various uncredited roles as a dancer in classic musicals, including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), White Christmas (1954), and Brigadoon (1954). Following his success in West Side Story, he starred in a series of films that, while not commercially successful, showcased his talents, such as Diamond Head (1962), Kings of the Sun (1963), and The High Bright Sun (1965). On the theatrical front, he made a significant impact playing Bobby in the inaugural national tour of Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed musical Company.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Chakiris appeared in several television series, leaving his mark on shows like Dallas and Superboy, and made a memorable appearance in the series finale of The Partridge Family. In a heartfelt return to the screen, he emerged from retirement for the 2021 film Not to Forget, aimed at raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, further solidifying his legacy in the entertainment industry.
