Douglas Wood

Douglas Wood (October 31, 1880 – January 13, 1966) was a prominent American actor whose career spanned the early to mid-20th century, embracing both stage and screen. Born on Halloween in 1880 to stage actress Ida Jeffreys, Wood's affinity for the performing arts was evident from an early age. Over his prolific career, he graced numerous Broadway productions and appeared in more than 100 films.

Wood made his film debut in 1933 with a supporting role in David Butler's comedy, *Bottom's Up*, featuring Spencer Tracy. He gained further recognition in 1934 when he took on the role of Wopsle in the film adaptation of *Great Expectations*, marking a significant milestone in his transition to "talkies." His filmography includes notable works such as *Maytime* (1937), where he reprised a role from the original stage play, and appearances in classics like *Two Against the World* (1936), *Buck Privates* (1941), *Here Comes Mr. Jordan* (1941), and *Sergeant York* (1941).

In the 1950s, Wood ventured into television, guest-starring in shows such as *The Lone Ranger*, *Fireside Theater*, and *Topper*. His final film appearance was in *That Certain Feeling* (1956), alongside Bob Hope. Wood returned to Broadway one last time in 1958 for a supporting role in *Jane Eyre*. He passed away on January 13, 1966, in Woodland Hills, California, leaving behind a legacy of diverse performances.
