Paul Lynde
Paul Edward Lynde (June 13, 1926 – January 10, 1982) was a prominent American comedian and actor, celebrated for his sharp wit and distinctive comedic style. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Uncle Arthur on the beloved television series Bewitched. Lynde also captured audiences as Harry MacAfee, the confused father in the musical film Bye Bye Birdie. From 1968 to 1981, he became a staple on the game show The Hollywood Squares, where he served as a "center square" panelist, delighting viewers with his humor and charm.
Born as the middle child in a family of six, Lynde's early life was shaped by his father’s work as a police officer and sheriff. His passion for acting ignited at a young age after watching the silent classic Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925) with his mother. Following his graduation from Northwestern University, Lynde made his way to New York City. His career took off when he performed stand-up at the renowned Number One Fifth Avenue nightclub, eventually leading to his Broadway debut in the musical review "New Faces of 1952."
In addition to his live performances, Lynde lent his voice to various animated characters in five Hanna-Barbera productions, showcasing his versatility as an entertainer. His legacy continues to influence comedians and actors today, solidifying his place in American entertainment history.
