Henry Kolker
Joseph Henry Kolker (November 13, 1874 – July 15, 1947) was a notable American actor and director, originally hailing from Berlin, Prussia, Germany. At the tender age of five, he and his family immigrated to Quincy, Illinois, where he would eventually embark on a successful career in the entertainment industry. Prior to his transition into silent films, Kolker cultivated a significant stage presence, sharing the spotlight with esteemed actresses such as Edith Wynne Matthison, Bertha Kalich, and Ruth Chatterton.
Kolker is perhaps most recognized for his cinematic roles, particularly his standout performance alongside Barbara Stanwyck in the influential Pre-Code film *Baby Face* (1933), where he portrayed the elderly CEO seduced by Stanwyck's character. Another memorable performance came in the 1938 film *Holiday*, directed by George Cukor, where he played Mr. Seton, the father of characters portrayed by Katharine Hepburn and Lew Ayres.
Kolker made his film debut in 1915 and later explored directing, with his most notable work being *Disraeli* (1921), featuring George Arliss. Although this film is now considered lost, one reel remains, and prints are preserved in Europe and Russia. Kolker's contributions to both theater and film solidified his legacy in the entertainment world, marking him as a versatile talent of his time.
