Nehemiah Persoff
Nehemiah Persoff (August 2, 1919 – April 5, 2022) was a renowned American actor with a notable career in film and television. Born in Jerusalem, in what was then the Palestine Mandate, he emigrated to the United States with his family in 1929.
Persoff cultivated his passion for acting during the 1940s. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he took significant strides in his acting career, primarily in New York theater. In 1947, he was accepted into the prestigious Actor's Studio, which marked the beginning of his transition into film and television.
His distinguished filmography includes classics such as *On the Waterfront*, *Some Like It Hot*, and *The Greatest Story Ever Told*. He is also remembered for his roles in *Yentl*, where he played Barbra Streisand's character's father, and as the voice of "Papa Mousekewitz" in the beloved *An American Tail* animated series.
Persoff's television credits are equally impressive, featuring roles in various iconic series including *The Twilight Zone*, *Alfred Hitchcock Presents*, *Gunsmoke*, and *Star Trek: The Next Generation*.
In the mid-1980s, amid health challenges that limited his acting career, Persoff turned to painting, focusing on watercolors. His artistic endeavors brought him joy and creativity in his later years, showcasing his diverse talents beyond acting.
