Chill Wills
Chill Theodore Wills (July 18, 1902 – December 15, 1978) was a prominent American actor and singer, best known for his distinctive voice and memorable performances in film and television. He began his artistic journey as a child, forming the Avalon Boys Quartet in the 1930s, where he showcased his vocal talents. After disbanding the group in 1938, Wills transitioned into acting, making notable appearances in several Westerns.
One of his most iconic roles came as the voice of Francis the Mule in a series of beloved films, where his unique vocal style complemented the character's cynical humor. Although he often went uncredited for his voice work, he made a significant impact, particularly in the film Francis Joins the WACS, where he also appeared as General Ben Kaye. Wills' deep, gravelly voice was also featured in the classic comedy Way Out West (1937).
Wills was no stranger to serious roles, portraying a phantom police sergeant in the film noir City That Never Sleeps (1953) and Uncle Bawley in the epic Giant (1956). His performance as the Beekeeper in The Alamo (1960) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, although his aggressive campaign for the Oscar drew criticism, including from John Wayne.
In television, Wills starred as the lead in the CBS series The Texan and appeared in the short-lived series Frontier Circus and The Rounders. His later years included political involvement, supporting George C. Wallace in the 1968 presidential campaign. Wills' career spanned decades, leaving a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry. His final performance was in the 1978 film Stubby Pringle's Christmas.
