Sir Nigel Barnard Hawthorne (April 5, 1929 – December 26, 2001) was a distinguished English actor renowned for his portrayal of Sir Humphrey Appleby, the Permanent Secretary in the beloved 1980s sitcom *Yes Minister*, and later, the Cabinet Secretary in its follow-up series, *Yes, Prime Minister*.
