Sir John Ronald Leon, 4th Baronet, known professionally as John Standing, was born on August 16, 1934, in London, England. The son of actress Kay Hammond and Sir Ronald George Leon, 3rd Baronet, Standing became the 4th baronet upon his father's passing in 1964, although he chose not to use the title. His family had historical ties to Bletchley Park, the notable code-breaking facility during World War II, until 1937.

Educated at Eton College and Millfield School in Somerset, Standing served as a second lieutenant in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps before pursuing a career in the arts at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. He began his theatrical journey in the esteemed 1955 production of Peter Brook's *Titus Andronicus*, featuring Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, and later took on prominent roles in classic works such as Oscar Wilde's *The Importance of Being Earnest* and Noël Coward's *Private Lives*, earning an Olivier Award nomination in 1979 for *Close of Play* at the National Theatre.

Standing's film career took off with his debut in *The Wild and the Willing* (1962) and included notable films like *The Elephant Man* (1980) and *A Good Woman* (2004). His television credits span a diverse range, featuring roles in the BBC's *The First Churchills* (1969) and the acclaimed series *Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy* (1979). His guest appearances in U.S. shows, such as *Murder, She Wrote*, further showcased his talent. In 2010, he was cast as Jon Arryn in the HBO series *Game of Thrones*, based on George R. R. Martin's *A Song of Ice and Fire* novels.
