Eijirō Tōno
Eijirō Tōno (東野英治郎 Tōno Eijirō; 17 September 1907 – 8 September 1994) was a prominent Japanese actor whose illustrious career spanned over five decades, during which he contributed to more than 400 television shows, nearly 250 films, and a variety of stage performances. Tōno gained international recognition for his noteworthy performances in acclaimed films directed by Akira Kurosawa, including the iconic Seven Samurai (1954) and Yojimbo (1961). He also collaborated with renowned filmmaker Yasujirō Ozu, appearing in masterpieces like Tokyo Story (1953) and An Autumn Afternoon (1962). Additionally, he played significant roles in Kihachi Okamoto's Kill! and the historical drama Tora! Tora! Tora!, which dramatized the events surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor.
His portrayal of the lead character in the long-running television jidaigeki series Mito Kōmon from 1969 to 1983 further solidified his reputation as a versatile actor. In the early stages of his career, Tōno was known by the stage name Katsuji Honjo (本庄克二). His final film appearance was in Juzo Itami's A-ge-man (Tales of a Golden Geisha) in 1990, marking the end of an extraordinary journey in the performing arts. Tōno's contributions to Japanese cinema and television have left an indelible mark, making him a beloved figure in the industry.
