Joan Bogle Hickson OBE (August 5, 1906 – October 17, 1998) was a distinguished English actress renowned for her captivating performances in theatre, film, and television. She gained widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Agatha Christie’s iconic detective, Miss Marple, in the beloved television series, "Miss Marple." In addition to her on-screen role, Hickson lent her voice to narrate various Miss Marple audiobooks, further solidifying her connection to the character.

Hickson was born in Kingsthorpe, Northampton, to Edith Mary (née Bogle) and Alfred Harold Hickson, a shoemaker. After attending Oldfield School in Swanage, Dorset, she pursued formal training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. She made her stage debut in 1927 and quickly became a celebrated figure in British theatre, known for her comedic and eccentric roles in London’s West End. One of her notable performances was as the cockney maid Ida in the original 1944 production of "See How They Run," staged at the Q Theatre and later at the Comedy Theatre in 1945.

Hickson's film career began in 1934, and she appeared in numerous supporting roles throughout her lifetime, including parts in several "Carry On" films such as Sister in "Carry On Nurse" and Mrs. May in "Carry On Constable." Her contributions to the arts earned her an OBE, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of entertainment.
