John George
John George was a Syrian-born actor who made his mark in the United States after emigrating in 1912 from France. His film career commenced in 1916, during the silent film era, and he went on to appear in a plethora of movies over the years. As his career progressed, he transitioned into television, showcasing his talent in various series, although most of his roles were often uncredited.
Born Tufei Filhela, he officially adopted the name John George, as indicated on his Declaration of Intention for U.S. citizenship in 1925, where he identified himself as “Tufei Filhela known as John George.” It is important to note that his surname has been mistakenly recorded as Filthela or Fatella in some accounts, which is incorrect.
Throughout his extensive career, John George contributed to the film and television industry in ways that, while frequently overlooked, helped shape the landscape of early 20th-century entertainment. His enduring legacy as a hardworking character actor in Hollywood continues to resonate, reminding us of the diverse backgrounds that have enriched the arts in America.
