Bruce Bennett, originally named Harold Herman Brix, was a multifaceted American talent known for his prowess in athletics and acting. Born on March 19, 1907, Brix began his journey as an accomplished shot putter. He attended the University of Washington, where he excelled in football and track, culminating in a Silver medal performance in the shot put at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. After moving to Los Angeles in 1929, Brix was invited to join the Los Angeles Athletic Club, where he developed a friendship with actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr., who facilitated a screen test for him at Paramount Pictures.

In 1931, Brix was cast as Tarzan in MGM's adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs's beloved character. Unfortunately, an injury sustained while filming the football movie Touchdown led to his replacement by swimming champion Johnny Weissmuller, who would go on to achieve significant fame in the role. Nevertheless, Brix found a second chance when Ashton Dearholt cast him as Tarzan in the serial The New Adventures of Tarzan (1935). Despite facing numerous challenges during filming in Guatemala, including harsh conditions and financial difficulties, Brix performed his own stunts, showcasing his dedication to the role.

His portrayal of Tarzan was notable for its sophistication; he was depicted as an articulate, cultured individual, a departure from the typical grunting interpretation. Although financial mismanagement prevented him from receiving his full salary, The New Adventures of Tarzan left a lasting legacy, emphasizing Brix's significant contribution to the character's cinematic history.
