Plot

Inspired by the real-life journey of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca, this film follows the intertwining lives of half-brothers Paco and Cruz, along with their mixed-race cousin Miklo. Set in 1972, the trio are part of the East L.A. gang "Vatos Locos." Their lives take a drastic turn following a violent crime and drug involvement. Miklo finds himself imprisoned at San Quentin, where he strives to create a sense of belonging. Meanwhile, Cruz's talent as an artist is overshadowed by a devastating heroin addiction, while Paco becomes a police officer, facing off against his own blood, Miklo.
