Plot

Young Nick Adams, raised by a controlling mother and a gentle, honorable father, sets off from his small Michigan town for a transformative journey across America. Along the way, he meets a washed-up boxer, a kind telegrapher, and a drunken burlesque promoter, each leaving a mark on him. After his aspirations to become a reporter in New York fall flat, he joins the Italian army as an ambulance driver during World War I. Through shared experiences with his comrades and a budding romance with a nurse post-injury, Nick evolves into a man shaped by love and loss.
