In May 1978, the mining town of Kolwezi in Zaire faces a brutal assault by communist guerrillas from Angola. The attackers take both European employees of a Belgian mining company and local Africans hostage, triggering a violent massacre. With many hostages being French nationals, the French government mobilizes a Paratrooper Regiment from the Foreign Legion for a rescue mission. The narrative weaves through the lives of several characters, including Delbart, a non-commissioned officer with a family, his replacement Damrémont, local doctor Bia, American Annie, and military officials working to orchestrate a counter-offensive.
