His father, Hal Overton, was a prominent music arranger for Thelonious Monk's big band and a respected educator at the Juilliard School. His mother, Nancy Overton, also known as Anne Swain Overton, was a vocalist with The Chordettes, a celebrated girl group known for hits like "Lollipop" and "Mr. Sandman."
