Lyle Bettger
Lyle S. Bettger (February 13, 1915 – September 24, 2003) was a notable character actor, most recognized for his portrayals of villains in Hollywood during the 1950s. He is particularly remembered for his role as Klaus, the fiercely jealous elephant handler, in the Academy Award-winning film The Greatest Show on Earth (1952).
Originally hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lyle was the offspring of Frank Bettger, a former infielder for the St. Louis Cardinals. With a passion for acting, Lyle left school in his late teens to pursue his dream.
He completed his education at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. His theatrical career began with a performance in Brother Rat at the Biltmore Theatre in 1936, and after some time in lesser-known theater productions, he secured the lead in the Broadway show The Flying Gerardos in 1940. This success led to a three-year contract with Paramount after a talent scout attended one of his performances.
Bettger made his film debut in the lead role of the film noir No Man of Her Own (1950). He quickly became a familiar face in Westerns, featuring in films such as Denver and Rio Grande (1952) and Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957). Known for his villainous portrayals, he delivered memorable performances as the sinister Joe Beacom in Union Station (1950) and the ruthless Nazi officer Kirchner in The Sea Chase (1955).
In addition to his film work, Bettger appeared in various dramatic television roles, including the 1957 series The Court of Last Resort, and guest-starred on popular shows like Hawaii Five-O and Bonanza.
Lyle Bettger was married to Mary Rolfe from 1940 until her passing in 1996, and they raised three children: Lyle Jr., Frank, and Paula. He also had a sister named Lee Morgan.
