Johan Allan Edwall (25 August 1924 – 7 February 1997) was a multifaceted Swedish talent known for his contributions as an actor, director, author, composer, and singer. He garnered international recognition primarily for his appearances in Ingmar Bergman's cinematic works, including a memorable role in "Fanny and Alexander" (1982). However, his most significant impact was felt in Scandinavia, where he charmed audiences by portraying endearing characters in film and television adaptations of Astrid Lindgren’s beloved children's stories.

Edwall honed his craft at the Royal Dramatic Training Academy in Stockholm from 1949 to 1952 and went on to build an impressive career, appearing in over 400 productions. His performance as Anton Svensson, the fiercely temperamental father in "Emil and the Piglet," earned him the Best Actor award at the 10th Guldbagge Awards in 1974.

In addition to acting, Edwall was a passionate songwriter, using his music to critique societal injustices through a folk-inspired lens, often featuring violin and accordion. His musical legacy continued after his passing, as he was awarded a Swedish Grammy posthumously in 2006.

He was also the proprietor of Teater Brunnsgatan Fyra in Stockholm, which he managed from 1986 until his death from prostate cancer in 1997. Edwall's legacy endures through his artistic contributions and his familial ties, including his sons: photographer Mattias Edwall and stage director Måns Edwall (1960–2016). Colleague Erland Josephson remarked on his unique charm, saying, "He was odd. But, damn it, he managed to be odd in a universal way!"
