William Schallert
William Joseph Schallert (July 6, 1922 – May 8, 2016) was an esteemed American character actor whose prolific career spanned over six decades, showcasing his talent across numerous television series and films. He is perhaps best remembered for his performances in notable productions such as Richard Diamond, Private Detective (1957–1959), Death Valley Days (1955–1962), and The Patty Duke Show (1963–1966).
Born in Los Angeles, California, Schallert was immersed in the arts from an early age, being the son of Edwin Francis Schallert, a prominent drama critic for the Los Angeles Times, and Elza Emily Schallert, a writer and radio personality. His acting journey began at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), though he briefly interrupted his studies to serve as a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he returned to UCLA and graduated in 1946.
Schallert's theatrical career took off in Los Angeles, where he performed in various plays, including a notable production of W. Somerset Maugham's Rain directed by Charlie Chaplin in 1948. He made his television debut in 1951 and quickly became a recognizable figure, guest-starring in iconic shows like The Adventures of Superman, The Twilight Zone, and The Dick Van Dyke Show, along with recurring roles in The Nancy Drew Mysteries and The Torkelsons.
In addition to his television work, Schallert appeared in several films, including The Bridges of Toko-Ri (1954), The Apartment (1960), and The Sting (1973). He passed away in Pacific Palisades, California, at the age of 93, leaving behind his wife, Leah Waggner, and their four children.
