George Chandler
George Chandler (June 30, 1898 – June 10, 1985) was an American actor hailing from Waukegan, Illinois. He embarked on his film career in 1928, and over the span of his life, he appeared in more than 140 movies, predominantly in minor supporting roles. Chandler is widely recognized for portraying Uncle Petrie Martin on the beloved television show, Lassie.
Before establishing himself in film, Chandler performed in vaudeville, where he was known as "George Chandler, the Musical Nut." His act combined humor with his violin performances. Additionally, he served in the United States Army during World War I.
Chandler’s career was prolific, with a range of film appearances from 1928 to 1979. Starting in the early 1950s, he also became a familiar face on various television series. His contributions to the acting community were acknowledged when he was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild in 1960.
Chandler passed away on June 10, 1985, in Panorama City, California, at the age of 86, after battling cancer. His extensive career in both film and television has left a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry.
