John Richard Basehart (August 31, 1914 – September 17, 1984) was a distinguished American actor known for his compelling performances across film and television. He gained fame in the 1960s as Admiral Harriman Nelson in the science fiction series *Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea*.

Basehart's film career includes memorable roles such as the acrobat known as "the Fool" in Federico Fellini's acclaimed Italian film *La strada*, the menacing killer in the film noir classic *He Walked by Night* (1948), and Ishmael in *Moby Dick* (1956). His versatility extended to roles in *Gunsmoke*, *The Twilight Zone*, and *Little House on the Prairie*.
