Richard Basehart
John Richard Basehart (August 31, 1914 – September 17, 1984) was a distinguished American actor known for his compelling performances across film and television. He gained fame in the 1960s as Admiral Harriman Nelson in the science fiction series *Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea*.
Basehart's film career includes memorable roles such as the acrobat known as "the Fool" in Federico Fellini's acclaimed Italian film *La strada*, the menacing killer in the film noir classic *He Walked by Night* (1948), and Ishmael in *Moby Dick* (1956). He also portrayed a disturbed member of the Hatfield clan in *Roseanna McCoy* (1949) and appeared in *Decision Before Dawn* (1951). He was married to Italian actress Valentina Cortese, with whom he had a son before their divorce in 1960. Notably, the couple starred together in *The House on Telegraph Hill* (1951).
Basehart's distinctive voice made him a sought-after narrator for various projects, including the mini-series *Vietnam: The Ten Thousand Day War* (1980). He lent his voice to the pilot episode of *Knight Rider*, portraying billionaire Wilton Knight. His versatility extended to roles in *Gunsmoke*, *The Twilight Zone*, and *Little House on the Prairie*.
In 1972, he appeared in the *Columbo* episode "Dagger of the Mind," alongside Honor Blackman. Basehart's later works included TV movies like *Sole Survivor* (1970) and *The Birdmen* (1971). He passed away at the age of 70, shortly after serving as an announcer for the closing ceremonies of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
