Russell David Johnson (November 10, 1924 – January 16, 2014) was a prominent American actor, most famously recognized for his portrayal of Professor Roy Hinkley on the iconic television series *Gilligan's Island*.

Johnson's journey began after graduating high school when he joined the United States Army Air Forces as an aviation cadet. Upon completing his training, he earned a commission as a second lieutenant and participated in 44 combat missions across the Pacific Theater during World War II as a bombardier aboard B-25 bombers. On March 4, 1945, while navigating a B-25 with the 100th Bombardment Squadron, Johnson's aircraft was shot down during a daring low-level bombing mission, resulting in severe injuries that earned him a Purple Heart and several other commendations, including the Air Medal.

Following the war, he was honorably discharged on November 22, 1945, and pursued a career in acting, utilizing the G.I. Bill to study at the Actors' Lab in Hollywood. He married actress Kay Cousins in 1949. Johnson's early film career included numerous Westerns and science fiction movies, where he showcased his versatile talent.

However, it was his role as the resourceful Professor on *Gilligan's Island* from 1964 to 1967 that solidified his legacy. Despite his character's ability to create ingenious solutions from limited resources, Johnson humorously noted that he could never fix the hole in the boat. The show has since remained a staple in television reruns, keeping Johnson's character alive in popular culture.
