Arthur O'Connell (March 29, 1908 – May 18, 1981) was a prominent American actor known for his work on both stage and screen. Born in New York City, O'Connell's career began in the mid-1930s when he made his legitimate stage debut, eventually becoming involved with Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre. His film career took off with a minor role in the iconic 1941 film *Citizen Kane*, although he had previously appeared in *Freshman Year* (1939) and several short films.

O'Connell gained recognition for his portrayal of the middle-aged suitor in the Broadway play *Picnic*, a role he reprised in the acclaimed 1956 film adaptation, earning him an Academy Award nomination. He received another Oscar nod for his performance as a disillusioned attorney in the 1959 courtroom drama *Anatomy of a Murder*, alongside James Stewart. O'Connell also featured in notable films such as *Follow That Dream* (1962) and *Kissin' Cousins* (1964), both starring Elvis Presley.

Throughout the 1960s, O'Connell continued to shine in character roles on television, including an episode of the medical drama *Breaking Point* and the sitcom *The Second Hundred Years*. However, his health began to decline in the mid-1970s, leading him to focus on commercial work, notably as a friendly pharmacist for Crest toothpaste. At the time of his passing due to Alzheimer's disease in May 1981, O'Connell was primarily appearing in commercials, having chosen to step back from acting. He was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, New York.
