Marion Mitchell Morrison, better known as John Wayne, was born on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa, and passed away on June 11, 1979. Affectionately dubbed "Duke," Wayne was a prominent American actor and filmmaker, celebrated for his larger-than-life portrayals in film. He won an Academy Award for his performance in True Grit in 1969 and maintained his status as a top box office attraction for over thirty years.

Wayne's upbringing took place in Southern California, where he graduated as president of Glendale High’s class of 1925. After losing a football scholarship to the University of Southern California due to a bodysurfing accident, he transitioned to the film industry, initially finding work at local studios. His early career included minor roles with the Fox Film Corporation until he landed his first leading part in Raoul Walsh's The Big Trail in 1930. This breakthrough led to numerous roles in B movies, primarily within the Western genre during the 1930s.

His career soared in 1939 with the iconic film Stagecoach, directed by John Ford, establishing him as a household name. Wayne appeared in a staggering 142 films over his career, with 83 of those being Westerns, where he often depicted rugged cowboys and heroic figures. Notable films include Red River (1948), The Searchers (1956), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). His last performance was in The Shootist (1976), where he portrayed an aging gunfighter facing cancer.
