Marjorie Main
Marjorie Main, originally named Mary Tomlinson, was a celebrated American actress born on February 24, 1890, and she passed away on April 10, 1975. A prominent figure in the entertainment industry, Main is best remembered for her role as Ma Kettle in the beloved series of ten Ma and Pa Kettle films produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Her career began in vaudeville, performing on the Orpheum circuit and in Chautauqua shows, before making her Broadway debut in 1916. She transitioned to film with "A House Divided" in 1931, initially portraying upper-class characters before being typecast as strong-willed, abrasive figures, a niche that suited her distinctive voice perfectly. Notable performances included her role in the film adaptation of "Dead End" (1937) and as a ranch operator in "The Women" (1939).
Main signed a contract with MGM in 1940, where she solidified her status as a leading character actress through collaborations with stars like Wallace Beery in films such as "Barnacle Bill" (1941) and "Jackass Mail" (1942). Her portrayal of Sonora Cassidy in "The Harvey Girls" (1946) further showcased her talent.
Her most iconic role, Ma Kettle, debuted in "The Egg and I" (1947), earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Throughout the early 1950s, she appeared in several MGM musicals, including "Meet Me in St. Louis." Main's later years in film included her acclaimed performance in "Friendly Persuasion" (1956), which garnered her a Golden Globe nomination. In 1958, she showcased her versatility on television, portraying the rugged Cassie Tanner in two episodes of "Wagon Train."
